Opinion of scientists: why residents of the Urals should not be afraid of earthquakes

People are scared by the earthquake that occurred in the Urals. Rescuers faced a flurry of a call from the public, many claim that they felt new tremors. But scientists called this earthquake a scientific exotic and explained why large earthquakes are impossible in the Urals.

On the night of 4 to 5 September, residents of Yekaterinburg and the surrounding settlements experienced tremors. The epicenter of perturbation of the earth's crust was located 133 kilometers from Ufa. The strength of jerks here is estimated at 5.8 points on the Richter scale. Ekaterinburg reached the tremors no more than two points. Total soil fluctuations were observed in three regions: Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk regions and Bashkiria.

Since 2006, this is the second earthquake in the Chelyabinsk region. The past earthquake was a bit more powerful and longer - two jolts of 4-5 points on the Richter scale.Scientists are sure that shaking of the earth’s crust in this region does not pose a danger to infrastructure and population.

The past earthquake was felt as if a heavy truck drove along the street at full speed. The natural cataclysm had a more psychological than destructive effect. Considering that this time the earth was shaking at night, most of the inhabitants of Yekaterinburg did not feel it.

True, in one of the supermarkets, video surveillance cameras were recorded as a piece of goods fell from the shelves. Another damaged building was a hospital in the Chelyabinsk region. Cracks appeared in the wall of the hospital building and the management announced the evacuation of people.

In the areas of the earthquake, special working groups are organized that inspect infrastructure facilities, social facilities, residential buildings for damage caused by a natural cataclysm. Schools, businesses and business centers operate normally.

Emergency mode

Residents of the epicenter of the earthquake marked the second push at the beginning of the working day at 8.36. The depth of the source of shocks remained at the same depth - 10 kilometers. In Kataev-Ivanovsk, schooling was stopped and students were sent home. The following shocks were felt in the afternoon at 12.27.

Many citizens reported minor damage, which occurred mainly in private homes. Somewhere the wall of the furnace burst, the plaster crumbled from the ceiling. In addition, in three houses in Stroygorodok and in three five-story buildings along Stepan Razin Street, cracks of 2-3 centimeters wide were formed. Cracked wall in the clinic. Of the 36 educational facilities, 12 were damaged.

The members of the working committee headed by the chairman of the council of deputies Galina Fedoseyeva carry out an inspection of urban, industrial buildings, engineering structures. No damage has yet been found. There is a high probability that the city is not affected. Scientists and officials rush to reassure anxious residents.

Scientists about the Ural earthquake

According to Stefan Panyak, an employee of the Department of Geology of the Ural Mining University, the nocturnal perturbation of the earth's crust falls into the category of scientific exotics. The Urals never knew of devastating earthquakes. The most pessimistic predictions allow for a jolting force of no more than seven on the Richter scale.

The scientist is skeptical of these predictions. According to him, in the next 300 years in the Urals will not happen an incident of this magnitude.Powerful earthquakes occur in other conditions. Here are the other mountains. The absence of geysers or other signs of seismic activity of the earth's crust is also noted.

The largest earthquake with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale was recorded in this region in August 1914. The epicenter of shocks was not far from Pervouralsk.
