MEV Concept
MEV is designed for docking with geostationary satellites that have exhausted their fuel reserves. The device will perform the function of a space tug, keeping it in a given position and performing all the necessary maneuvers. At the end of the paid lifetime, MEV will launch the customer’s satellite into the disposal orbit. According to representatives of Orbital ATK, MEV is able to dock with 80% of existing geostationary satellites. The device is designed for 15 years of service, during which he in turn can serve several satellites.

In the new device, which received the designation MRV (Mission Robotic Vehicle), a more economical approach will be laid.On board will be from 10 to 12 autonomous modules equipped with engines and navigation system. It is planned that the MRV will converge with the old satellites, then with the help of a robotic arm to install modules on them. The modules will have the ability to hold the satellite in a given position, but will not be able to change the height of its orbit. Fuel reserves on board should be enough for 5 years of work. It is assumed that this option will be used by customers who do not require all the capabilities of MEV.

MRV Concept
Orbital ATK plans that the MRV will be ready for use by 2021. As for the MEV, the first such device will go into space in the summer. His goal will be Intelsat-901. It was launched in 2001 and after 15 years of service was taken into burial orbit. MEV-1 will get close to him, dock and then return to the previous working position. The contract involves the extension of the life of Intelsat-901 for 5 years. In January of this year, representatives of Orbital ATK said that Intelsat is going to order another MEV device. Roughly, it will be launched in the next decade.
