The WFIRST telescope will receive half of the funding requested.

Over the past few years, NASA’s annual budget has, on average, exceeded the amount originally requested by the agency. But at the same time, not all space missions remain in the "plus". Of all the major NASA projects, the greatest threat is looming over the next-generation infrared telescope WFIRST (Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope). The proposed NASA budget for 2019 proposed by the Donald Trump administration simply does not provide for its further funding.

Much of the WFIRST problems are linked to the epic around the James Webb telescope. Due to a number of technical problems, its launch has already been postponed several times, and the budget is likely to again go beyond the limits of the approved amount. Many people fear that WFIRST will simply follow in the footsteps of its predecessor.
In response to this, WFIRTS advocates point out that the key problems of James Webb are related to the very complex design of its composite mirror and the unfolding heat shield. In this regard, the WFIRST design is much simpler. There are no overly complex engineering solutions in it and it relies on elements that have already been tested, which means a much lower probability of some kind of breakdown and delays.

Many representatives of the American scientific community hope that Congress will listen to these arguments and save the telescope, continuing its funding. And apparently, their expectations are met. But only half. Recently, a congressional committee on science approved a draft NASA funding bill for 2019. The document provides for the allocation of $ 150 million for WFIRST. This is only half the amount requested by NASA.

Thus, WFIRST is still in limbo. Funding will allow further development of the project, but with a much smaller scale. In fact, NASA has received a year of delay in order to convince lawmakers of the importance of the telescope and that it will not repeat the fate of Webb. Despite all this, the new administrator of the agency, Jim Bridenstein, is rather optimistic about the telescope. According to him, he estimates the probability of WFIRST implementation at 90%.
