Very Large Telescope Obtained Ultra High-Definition Neptune Images

The ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) made the first observations with a new system of adaptive optics in the "laser tomography" mode. The first results are quite impressive. Thanks to the new technology, the 8-meter UT4 telescope, which is part of the VLT, was able to obtain images in the visible range with a clarity higher than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

This result was achieved thanks to the use of the multi-channel spectrograph MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer), in combination with the GALACSI adaptive optics unit. It uses a four-laser device for the formation of “artificial stars”, which in turn is part of the AOF (Adaptive Optics Facility) adaptive optics system.

Adaptive optics designed to compensate for atmospheric distortion. Lasers mounted on UT4 illuminate the sodium atoms in the upper atmosphere, which the telescope “sees” as artificial stars.AOF uses light from these “stars” to determine the parameters of atmospheric turbulence and from them with a frequency of a thousand times per second calculate the deformations of the flexible secondary mirror of the telescope compensating this turbulence.

Thanks to the new mode of operation of the GALACSI unit, astronomers were able to correct almost all of the atmospheric turbulence over the telescope, which made it possible to obtain much clearer images of the sky (albeit a smaller area). As a result, UT4 actually reached the theoretical limit of optical resolution. As a good example, ESO experts published images of Neptune made by a telescope. Their quality is superior to similar images taken with the Hubble telescope.

The new technology will allow astronomers to study with unprecedented details such unusual objects as supermassive black holes in the centers of distant galaxies, their jets, young stars, globular clusters, supernovae, planets of the Solar System, their satellites to and many others. In addition, the AOF experience gained at UT4 will help scientists and engineers equip the world's largest ELT optical telescope with such devices, which is being built in Chile.
