Why you can not believe astrological predictions: reveal the cards
It seems to you that the horoscope accurately describes you, but it is not.
Have you ever wondered how accurately your horoscope describes your character, habits and lifestyle? This works forer effect. It was named after a psychologist who in 1948 conducted a famous experiment.
Bertram Forer asked students to complete a “personality assessment test.” As a result, each of them was given the same text with a set of common phrases. By the way, taken from the horoscope.
Many students noted that the description very accurately describes their personality traits. No one suspected deception.
Later an even more audacious experiment was conducted.
The students were asked to complete the same test, then each was offered a choice of one of two results: real and fake, with common phrases. More than half (59%) of the subjects preferred fake.
People tend to perceive uncertain characteristics as created individually.
If you put pressure on authority and create the right mystical or scientific halo - success is guaranteed. This is how not only astrologers work, but also tarologists, palmists, fortune-tellers, specialists in reading auras, graphologists. Yes, and some psychologists do not disdain.
Astro predictions justify your failures in the desired way.
People love to be praised, pity, and justified. If something good happens to us, we tend to consider it our own merit. Bad is the opposite of fault of circumstances.
Astrology offers the perfect excuse: the stars are not so agreed. The opposite rule applies to others: they are to blame for their troubles themselves, and their achievements are only the result of luck.
The human brain is designed in such a way that often he perceives information selectively, depending on how well it fits into his picture of the world.
If he wants to believe in astrological forecasts, he will adjust them to fit his reality, “cut out” the excess and embellish the right one.
Horoscope makes you see what you want
Partly astrology, like other types of predictions, works due to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, or frequency illusion. When a person receives new information, especially emotionally colored, she begins to literally pursue him.
For example, someone went to an astrologer and received a forecast that a bargain was waiting for him in the near future.
Since then, at every step he begins to see interesting opportunities and everywhere there are "necessary" people. In fact, nothing has changed: it’s just that the brain began to perceive what was going on differently.
At the same time, a person can “unexpectedly find out” that those around him also believe in astrology, “everyone around” read astro forecasts, “many” visited astrologers.
Regarding the frequency illusion there is such a joke: any bachelor is surrounded by happy couples, and any married man is surrounded by happy bachelors.
Many astrological predictions do not have a "shelf life." If the horoscope promises that the black stripe in life is over, it can be said with confidence that this will happen sooner or later.
The ability to "predict" the future creates the illusion of control
A person feels uncomfortable in an unpredictable and chaotic world. I want to believe that somewhere there is a big invisible keeper: he, of course, sees everything, maintains order, establishes laws and punishes the guilty.
In psychology, there is such a thing - the locus of control. It can be directed inward, and in this case, the person believes that he controls all events.
If the locus of control is outside, the person shifts the responsibility to fate, external circumstances.
Astrology gives confidence that the outside world is intelligent, fair and predictable. The future can be "spied on," and the study of the interposition of celestial bodies will help in this.
This is the benefit and great harm of astrology. She can reassure, instill confidence. Sometimes it helps to do something that at first glance seems impossible. Sometimes pushes for fatal mistakes.
Predictions of different astrologers do not converge, and you cannot verify the accuracy of predictions.
Many people treat newspaper horoscopes as entertainment, but they think that if you find a good astrologer, then he will definitely read the entire background on the natal chart and will correctly predict the future.
The problem is that different astrologers do not often agree on opinions. It is impossible to check which of them gives out more reliable information. Everyone talks about what astrology is and what it is capable of, in its own way.
The fact that astrology has been around for a long time does not mean that you can believe it.
The ancient Sumerians, Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese sought the advice of astrology. She conquered the minds of the Greeks and Romans.
The medieval Europeans used the services of astrologers; later, representatives of occult schools and esoteric movements took a second life into it. In the age of computer technology and genetic engineering, there is still such a profession - the astrologer.
However, the antiquity of a certain system of knowledge still does not indicate that it reflects reality.
But what about the great scientists who studied astrology and promoted it to the masses? One of these was Johann Kepler (1571–1630). He derived the postulates about the motion of celestial bodies, which astronomy still operates on. And at the same time he was known as a masterly compiler of horoscopes.
Kepler himself called astrology “stupid daughter of a sensible mother” - astronomy, and noted that if the “daughter” did not entertain the public and take money from it, the “mother” would have nothing to exist.
Astrology is not a science
According to a 2012 survey, 42% of Americans think so. In Russia, the situation is not very different.
However, many facts indicate that astrology is far from real science.
Astronomers were able to circumvent astrologers even in terms of predictions. Observations of the sky in a telescope helped to discover Uranus, mathematical calculations - Neptune. Before that, astrologers did not notice errors in horoscopes and did not suspect that there are more than six planets in the Solar System.
Many scientific studies have shown that astrology does not work. One of the most famous was held by physicist Sean Carlson in 1985. He selected 28 astrologers who were considered the best, and asked them to compile natal charts for 116 people.
The same people passed the psychological profile test. Then each astrologer received a natal chart and three profiles: it was necessary to determine which of the three corresponds to the chart.
The chances of accidentally guessing in this situation are 33%. It was exactly this result that Carlson was counting on.
Astrologers promised to give the correct answer in half the cases. As a result, the prediction of the physicist came true. The experiment showed that the astrological predictions of the best specialists are no more precise than the “spear method.”
Zodiacal constellations are not what we think, and are very far away.
Planets and stars are very large objects. They are far, and yet theoretically they can influence the characters and destinies of people. Is not it?
Alas, astrology cannot clearly explain why the reversal of Venus in a retrograde movement causes people to rethink their love relationships.
Well-known scientist Stephen Hawking notes that "she [astrology] is inconsistent with our theories that have been tested experimentally."
The planets of the solar system are our closest neighbors. Many stars are so far away that their light reaches the earth for millions of years. We see them as they were a long time ago. So how do they influence us right now?
The interposition of celestial bodies gradually changes - but many astrologers do not know about this, as they do not know about the dwarf planets of the solar system, which should have influenced horoscopes.
About 350,000 people are born on Earth every day. Imagine how much should be the same characters and destinies? This is another weak point of astrology.
Zodiac constellations are actually 13
Constellations are objects that exist only in imagination. The stars are very far from each other and are not connected with each other, but for us they are projected onto one “screen”. We do not see thousands of light years separating them, and it seems to us that they are very close.
The most important constellations in astrology are the signs of the zodiac, because the Sun’s path runs through them.
Of course, in reality, the Sun does not fly through any archers and calves - here the optical illusion and the power of our imagination work again.
Ophiuchus also crosses the ecliptic (visible from Earth the path of the Sun across the sky) and is essentially the thirteenth sign of the zodiac. But astrologers prefer not to remember him. Many people do not know about such details, therefore, so much noise was made by the message of scientists from NASA that the signs of the Zodiac are actually 13, and in general the horoscope must be thoroughly redrawn.
Many Sagittarius became Ophiuchus, Aquarius - Capricornus, Gemini - Taurus. In the most uncomfortable position after such perturbations were people who had tattoos with a personal zodiac sign.
In fact, the Babylonians probably knew about the thirteenth constellation. It did not allow to adjust the zodiac under the twelve-month calendar - and it would be so convenient! The extra month was no place to take, much simpler to agree not to notice one of the constellations.
And in general, the division of the ecliptic into 12 equal segments is very conditional. Zodiacal constellations have a different area. In large sun lingers longer, small crosses quickly.
