Zelenchukskaya HPP-PSP

Not so often in Russia new hydropower plants are launched, and even more so unusual. With the launch of the 3rd and 4th reversible hydraulic units on the basis of the HPP operating since 2006, two stations were combined: HPP and PSP. Zelenchukskaya HPP-PSPP is the first, fundamentally new for our country, pumped storage power station with a water pressure of 220-230 meters. I will show you today how the station is arranged, and how the launch of the new hydraulic units took place.

1. Construction of the station in Karachay-Cherkessia, between the cities of Karachaevsk and Ust-Dzheguta, began as early as 1976. According to the initial design, 4 radial-axial hydraulic units with a capacity of 80 MW each were to be installed at the station. But as a result of protests by environmentalists, and due to a lack of funds in 1993, the original project was adjusted to reduce flow selection, which led to a decrease in capacity and hydropower generation.

2. In 2006, the HPP was launched. Electric power was produced by 2 radial-axial hydraulic units with a capacity of 80 MW each, operating at a design head of 234 m. In the same 2006, a decision was made to construct a PSP using backlots for unspecified 2 hydraulic units. And so, the construction of the pumped plant was completed.A lower pool was built, and two reversible hydraulic units were installed in the engine room of the hydroelectric station. At night, these hydraulic units, operating in the pump mode and using cheap electricity, pump water to the highest point in the daily regulation pool, and in the morning and in the afternoon during peak loads this water is used to generate expensive electricity.

3. Zelenchukskaya HPP-PSPP is a unique and complex hydraulic structure, it can be seen from the derivation scheme. The Zelenchukskaya HPP includes: a water intake waterworks on the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River, a water intake waterworks on the Marukha River, a water intake waterworks on the Axaut River, a diversion channel with open and closed derivation, a hydroelectric power station. The water intake takes place 38 km from the station, then the water passes through the canals and many kilometers long siphons. And today I will show you what made the launch of the new PSPP possible.

5. Were built: a lower pool with an area of ​​15 hectares and a useful volume of 0.9 million m³ and BSR (daily regulation pool) with a volume of 1.85 million cubic meters.(it is not on the photo, it is located a few kilometers from the station and is now hidden under the snow).

6. And so it looked at the time of construction 1.5 years ago. Currently, the hydropower plant is only open from March to September during the high-water period. With the commissioning of the PSPP, clean energy will be produced year-round, which will increase the republic’s own electricity supply by up to 45%.

8. Equalization tanks are installed on the mountain to prevent water hammer with a sharp increase in water level. We will rise to them after the ceremonial launch.
